First minute

From arriving to a terminal on your own laptop, in a browser tab, inside a minute, with nothing typed first. Everything else is built backwards from this.

Install

One line, pasted into a terminal on the machine you want to reach. The code in it is single-use and expires in ten minutes.

curl -fsSL https://your.os/install | sh -s brave-otter-42-7Q4K

What is open on first boot↑ Why · Alex reaches the laptop at home from a café Alex is in the laptop's terminal within the minute, with nothing to sign up for.

No empty desktop, no tour.

First boot opens a welcome note, Add a machine, and Your devices

The note is a real file you can edit, and says it lives in this browser only. Add a machine is the line above; run it and the machine's terminal opens in the next pane. Your devices lists each with what it may do, and a QR code to open on a phone.

Shown when an end-to-end run from a fresh browser and a fresh Linux machine reaches the laptop's terminal in under a minute.

Your name, and keeping it↑ Why · Alex reaches the laptop at home from a café Alex keeps the account by picking a name, once there's something worth keeping.↑ Why · Alex loses a phone, and it opens nothing A name never reused means a stale key in some old browser can't be handed to someone else.

You start on a random name of your own, like brave-otter-42; when there is something worth keeping, you pick a name and add a passkey in one step.

A name is never reused

A stale key may sit in some browser's storage for that name, and a new owner's page would run there.

Shown when a retired name only redirects, for ever.

Renaming moves the account like pairing a device

A new name is a new origin, whose storage starts empty.

Shown when after a rename the old origin has revoked itself, wiped with Clear-Site-Data and unregistered its service worker.

The passkey comes with the name

A passkey is bound to its domain, so one made on the random name would die at the rename.

Shown when no passkey prompt before keep it.
